Student Charter

At the Arts University College at Bournemouth we believe strongly in working in partnership with our students. We are committed to excellence in arts, design and media and it is our responsibility to provide you with the necessary support and assistance to help you achieve the highest standards in your work, and to enjoy your life as a student here.

As a student at AUCB you have the right to expect that we will deliver our promises to you. As members of an academic community, you also have responsibilities. We expect our students to respond positively to their partnership with the University College, and within the wider community, and to uphold the reputation of AUCB, both on and off campus.

Student Responsibilities
Throughout the course you will be expected to:

  • show consideration and care towards the environment of the University College

STUDENT REPRESENTATION

You will of course have a great deal of informal contact with academic staff throughout your course. However, there are also formal, structured mechanisms to ensure that students are involved in AUCB’s decision-making process, and can give feedback about their course and its development.

Each course has two student Course Representatives for each cohort. The Course Representatives sit on the Course Board, which is chaired by the Course Leader and is responsible for considering the operation of the course, and its development and improvement. Course Representatives will collect feedback from you in advance of the Course Board, and will feed back to you on any decisions or actions agreed.

The Course Representatives elect two of their number to sit on the School Board, which takes a broader overview of the operation of courses within the School, and may also discuss proposed institutional policy developments.

It is important that feedback is given through the right channels, and constructive comment is essential to bring about improvements. The University College and the Students’ Union offer training to all new Course Representatives each year to discuss the role, and provide support and advice.

Course Representatives are elected at the start of the academic year (for continuing students this may take place at the end of the previous academic year). If you are interested in becoming a Course Representative, you should discuss this with your course leader, or with one of the Students’ Union officers.

AUCB takes the views of its students very seriously, and there is student representation on most of the University College’s key committees. Recruitment procedures for senior members of staff usually feature an interview with a student panel.

Students’ Union sabbatical officers also represent students more broadly, for example through affiliation to the National Union of Students (NUS), and on a more local level in meetings with University College staff to discuss matters of concern.
