Learning Support for International Students

Studying at university is a challenge. You will have to deal with your  course content – its practice, theory, technology, terminology… as well as meeting the demands of  your academic assignments, seminars and lectures . If English is not your first language, you may find these, or some of these elements,  especially challenging.

AUCB has an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tutor who can help you develop  your academic language  and study skills. This can be done through:

  • One-to-one tutorials

Provide personalised opportunities for academic-related support with written work, such as planning, structure, use of academic language as well as study skills support e.g. time management skills, organisational skills and  presentation skills

  • Small group tutorials

Provide similar opportunities to the one-to-one tutorials above but, working with other students from the same course and year as you, also encourage you to develop and practise your communication skills

  • Lunchtime Study Skills workshops

These are scheduled throughout the academic year and are open to all international students at AUCB. They focus on  essential academic skills including:

Note taking from lectures

Assignment writing skills

Referencing skills

Presentation skills

Research and reading skills

Discussion skills

  • In-sessional Language Refresher Course

This course, which runs throughout the first term, is designed to help first year students brush up their English language skills. It reviews essential grammar and helps students to

build up academic vocabulary and revise  spelling and punctuation. Pair and group activities are included to reactivate, practise  and improve spoken English.

  • Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes Course

This 5-week course is for  undergraduate degree applicants with a minimum overall IELTS score (or equivalent) of 5.5 and a minimum score of 5.0 in each component. It delivers targeted English language development and the  academic skills which are key to successful  study at university.

The EAP tutor, Andrea Herde, is based in C011, which is located by the Gallery space on the ground floor of the north building. You can contact her on:
