Kirsten’s current Ph.D research explores the representation of people as brand icons on food packaging. Kirsten’s other research interests include Kitsch; popular taste; flock: its use and associative values and creativity. With co-curator Pam Langdown, Kirsten organised the exhibition and co-authored the catalogue Flockage: The Flock Phenomenon (Russell- Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, 2008) supported by the Arts Council and the Textile Society. She also co-organised and presented at the Flockage Symposium (2008). Kirsten has published many articles and has presented papers on flock at numerous conferences including ‘Flocked Forms, Functions and Feelings’ at the Design History Society Annual Conference, (2008); ‘For the Love of Flock’ at the Love Objects Conference (National College of Art and Design, Dublin (2008) and at the European Flock Association’s International Flock Symposium (Berlin, 2009). She is the author of the Flock Friendly Group Newsletter (2008-) and is currently working on a book on Flock.
Kirsten’s research into plastic created the AIB Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) Plastics Network Project (http://plasticsnetwork.aucb.ac.uk/) and secured an AHRC award 2004-5. Work related to her NTF Award (2004), ‘On Trial: Teaching without Talking’, has been presented to international audiences, including, for example, the Creativity and the Law Curriculum Conference (Aston University, 2008); Unspoken Interactions Conference (London College of Fashion, 2007); ConnectED International Conference on Design Education (University of New South Wales, Sydney, 2007) and published (2008) by the University of NSW as part of conference proceedings; AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Learning and Teaching Conferences (Denver, 2006 & Tennessee, 2007); Higher Education Academy (HEA) UK Centre for Legal Education Annual Conference (University of Warwick, 2007).
Aspects of Kirsten’s ‘On Trial’ research are published in Art, Design and Communication in Higher Education (5:3, 2007, pp. 213-26); Directions in Legal Education (UK Centre for Legal Education, Autumn 2007, pp. 16-17). Kirsten’s contribution to the conference Creativity or Conformity? Building Cultures of Creativity in Higher Education (UWIC, 2007) is published at http://www.creativityconference07.org (Word doc) Kirsten contributed ‘The Power of Wow! The Exclamation that Makes and Breaks Silence’ to Betsy Ward ed., Silences (Gatineau, Quebec: Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and Council of 3M National Teaching Fellows, 2008). Her ‘On Trial’ work during 2007-8 has been selected for future publication in Heller, S. and Talarico, L. (eds) Design School Confidential: Class Projects from International Graphic Design Programs.
Kirsten’s research into learning and teaching includes: problem based learning; teaching awards; threshold concepts in art and design. She is Project Leader for the HEA National Teaching Fellow Project ‘Creative Interventions: valuing and assessing creativity in student work related learning in the public and not-for-profit sectors’ (2008-2010).
Kirsten presented her learning and teaching research at the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Annual Conferences (1SSOTL), (Washington DC, 2006; Sydney, 2007; Edmonton, Canada, 2008) and at the Society for Teaching and Learning in HE Annual Conferences (Prince Edward Island, 2005; Edmonton, 2007 and Toronto, 2006).
Kirsten is peer reviewer for applications for HEA Senior Fellows, NTF project and individual awards (2005-8) and for conference and publication proposals for numerous international organisations (2000-).
