Joel is a practising illustrator whose commissions have taken him into a range of disciplines/activities including advertising campaigns, fashion magazines and music graphics. He has made regular editorial contributions to The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. To date clients have included Adidas, BBC Radio 1, Full Circle, Greenpeace, The Ministry of Sound, Motorola, RIBA, Sony Europe, Dazed and Confused, Harvard Business Review and The New York Times.

In 2006, Joel collaborated with youth band, The Adored, to produce a series of images towards their A New Language CD and promotional material for LP release. He worked with a photographer and designer team in the USA to create work that challenges preconceptions about the nature of images produced by the illustrative and photographic mediums respectively. In the same year, Joel was commissioned by Sony Playstation 3 to produce two artworks, ‘This is Living’, to assist promotion of their UK launch (exhibited at 3Rooms, Shoreditch, London). He was also invited by Sceptre, along with twenty other contemporary artists and illustrators, to design an original cover for David Glen Gold’s novel, Carter Beats the Devil to celebrate Sceptre’s twenty-first anniversary.

Joel’s work was published in a number of texts including Beat 4 and Beat 3 (London: Heart, 2008 and 2006 respectively); Musikgraphics (Hong Kong: Victionary, 2008); Illusive 2 and All Allure (Berlin: Die Gestalten Verlag, 2007 and 2006 respectively); Thinking Visually and The Fundamentals of Illustration (Lausanne: Ava Publishing, 2006 and 2005 respectively) and Illustration Now (Cologne: Taschen, 2005) as exemplars of good practice within the discipline. He also worked on collaborative projects such as that published in Graphic Poetry

(Victionary/Wig-01, 2005) in which leading international designers, illustrators and image-makers created visual responses to modern poetry from contemporary writers around the world.
