“I think of art, at its most significant, as a DEW line, a Distant Early Warning system that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it”
- Marshall McLuhan
The exhibition DEW line represents the culmination of a year’s research and practice, presented in the mediums of fine art, costume, photography, graphic design and animation. The work, while focused within each medium, is greatly influenced by a cross-pathway interaction that forces a wider perspective and greater scope of artistic expression.
The DEW line concept originated in the 1960s with reference to a chain of radar stations in Canada and the Arctic to detect approaching Soviet bombers during the Cold War. Canadian scholar, Marshall McLuhan appropriated the idea to talk about 'what Art does or is.’
This exhibition is a marker; an early warning of things to come, the boundaries that are being pressed, pushed, eroded; ultimately the foundation of each artist’s future practice.
The University College offers a full-time and part-time taught MA with pathways in Animation, Contemporary Performance, Costume, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Media and Photography.
