28th June 2010

An FdA Fashion student from the Arts University College at Bournemouth has won the Maria Grachvogel for Lectra Award 2010.

Phillipa Toppin's Collection

Second-year student Phillipa Toppin’s dress design was selected as the winner by top fashion designer Maria Grachvogel and digital technology specialists Lectra. Entrants to the competition had to use Lectra’s dedicated software solutions to design a dress which would appeal to the Grachvogel customer, a final toile of the dress was chosen as the “most outstanding idea combining art, functionality, creativity, cut and fit”.

Maria Grachvogel is a well-loved label of all aficionados of fine design. Established in 1994 and shown for the first time at London Fashion Week in 1995, the label is a secret of many of the world’s most stylish women, including Angelina Jolie and Emma Thompson.

Phillipa will now take advantage of a one-year internship with Maria herself, at the flagship store on Sloane Street, which opened in 2001. After her work placement, Phillipa plans to return to the Arts University College at Bournemouth to complete a third year of her degree.

Patricia Grice, senior lecturer on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Technology /FdA Fashion course at the University College, said “Introducing the Lectra system into our course has been very beneficial to our students. Our aim is to produce graduates who have gained the innovative, creative and technical skills required to succeed in the fashion business. The Maria Grachvogel for Lectra Award has provided an amazing opportunity for students and we are very proud that Phillipa has been selected as this year’s winner.”

Phillipa’s collection was shown at an innovative fashion catwalk event earlier this month at the O2 Academy Bournemouth. The show, entitled ‘Antithesis’, was presented by the Arts University College at Bournemouth.
