Student Life
The University College is a very friendly place and most teaching and support staff will know students personally. Each course has a number of places for UK and overseas students - this ensures that we have a varied mix of individuals from different backgrounds whilst all students receive a truly British education.
Our strengths are recognised by our students - The Arts University College at Bournemouth has once again confirmed its status as one of the top specialist HEIs in the UK, with excellent results in the newly published 2011 National Student Survey (NSS). Overall satisfaction with the University College rose by 3% from the previous year, to 82%, which was 6% above average in the Creative Arts and Design sector. Learning resources also scored highly with 87% of students recommending the facilities, which came in amongst the top 20 universities in the country alongside personal development.
The University College’s specialist Library was once again recognised, with 91% of students scoring the service highly, putting it in the top 20 of universities sector-wide. The University College also ranked in the top 20 overall in Access to IT Facilities; and Confidence in Tackling Unfamiliar Problems.
The NSS survey follows previous success in this year’s Destination of Leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) results, which evidences graduate success in employment, with 97.5% of 2010 graduates employed or undertaking further study.
The University College has a refectory / canteen, arts bar and a café plus communal student areas as well as an active student union that organises events.
Everyone at the University College studies creative subjects so there is course collaboration and there is a very exciting atmosphere especially at the end of year shows and graduation ceremonies.
The Bournemouth University campus is situated across the road and University College students are able to use their facilities which include the gym, student union shop, book shop and Santander Bank. There is also the chance to meet other international students on different types of courses.
At the start of the academic year we run an orientation programme for all European and International students to meet and make new friends. These Orientation days also provide the opportunity for students to ask questions about living in Bournemouth, life as a University College student and about their studies in a fun and friendly environment.
Once on course students can obtain help and advice from the International Office and Student Services and learning support (including help with improving academic English) is available from a specialised team of academic tutors.
The International Office also organise occasional get-togethers for all our international students (Non EU). However, as the University College is on one single campus it is very easy to make friends (many larger institutions can have more than one campus and these can be several miles apart).
The International Office is a member of Host UK which is a network of UK residents who welcome international students (Non EU) to their homes for a day, weekend or Christmas. Host UK is a unique opportunity for international students (Non EU) to visit a host family in a different part of the UK and experience home and community life in Britain.
The International Office also has a brand new Facebook page for our International Students. It offers a platform for students to interact, there is also plenty of information about current events, images of student work, campus, local area and student life.
