Financial help whilst you are studying

Loans

American students are eligible to apply to the Family Federal Education Loan Program (FFELP) of the US Department of Education as the University College has been authorized to certify applications - full details of this can be found in Loans for American Students.

Scholarships and Bursaries

As we are a small, specialist University College, we are unable to offer any scholarships or financial assistance for Preparation for Higher Education or Higher Education international students.

The British Council website on funding your studies gives details of the types of scholarship available at different institutions and also details of organisations that may be able to provide financial assistance for international students.

There are a limited number of Post Graduate bursaries available. Bursaries are offered on the basis of: demonstrating past achievement (either certificated or through work experience); capacity to achieve to Masters Standard; evidence of commitment; and the statement of intent.

Working whilst you study

International students can now work without obtaining permission from UKBA as long as they have a student visa. Do check your passport sticker (entry clearance) or residence permit card as this will confirm if you are allowed to take any part time work in the UK.

The maximum amount of part-time work you can do during term time is:

20 hours per week if you are studying a course at or above UK degree level.

10 hours per week if you are studying a course that is below degree level for example any
Preparation for Higher Education (Diploma) course.

You can work full-time during vacations, for further information on working in the UK look at the UKCISA website.

If you have a student visitor visa you will not be allowed to take paid or unpaid employment.

Please Note: This is the current situation, but it is liable to change.

Gradsouthwest is a useful website to help students and graduates to looking for a job locally. Although there are many part-time jobs available in the local area, please do not rely on part-time employment to support yourself.

Working in the UK after graduation

The Tier 1 Post-study Work (PSW) visa was launched to encourage overseas students graduating from UK institutions to pursue a career in the UK. It enables non-EEA students who have successfully completed and obtained a degree, Master’s degree, PhD, or postgraduate certificate or diploma to work in the UK for up to two years after completion of their studies.

Please Note: The Tier 1 Post-study Work visa route will cease in April 2012. This will be replaced by a version of the Tier 2 Skilled Migrant Worker visa. We are waiting for further information from UKBA regards these changes.

For more information please refer to UK Border Agency website: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier1/poststudy/

For further information, you may find it useful to check the Working in the UK website or UK Border Agency website and look at a useful leaflet called "Find your way to work" produced by the British Council.
