Is this the right course for me?

This programme is designed to prepare students for level one undergraduate study in a specific subject at the Arts University College at Bournemouth. The philosophy of the course is to encourage and nurture creative, individual and independent learners who will be capable of Honours Degree level study.

You will be encouraged to develop lateral thinking, experimentation and risk taking to develop personal ideas and to challenge pre-conceived ideas about specialist areas. Particular emphasis is placed on experiential, experimental and integrated learning. Process development and conceptual development through problem solving, thematic enquiry and project work will be strongly encouraged, placing particular emphasis on sketchbook/workbook development. The course promotes practical skills and technical and creative media use, which encourage professional standards in the production of work. Throughout the course your practical studio work will be supported by a programme of studies in the history of art and design. This course demands a high degree of discipline and self-motivation.

Course Structure, Pathways and Careers

The first units provide an introduction to the techniques, processes, skills and knowledge that you will use throughout your course. An awareness of the importance of drawing in the creative process and experimentation with a variety of media and materials will be eloped. You will learn how to research and develop ideas and studio sessions will take place to encourage visualising techniques and project development processes. There will be workshops to support your specialist interest where you will learn techniques and processes relevant to your area of specialism.

You will be encouraged to reflect and analyse your strengths and weaknesses and seek to improve your work. During the second unit of the course you will work alongside Foundation Diploma students in specialist areas. This will give you the opportunity to work in vibrant and exciting groups by engaging in specialist projects appropriate to your chosen subject.

You will further develop your individual interests, knowledge and skills, through a continuing investigation of context and practice and through experimentation with materials and processes. The teaching sessions and workshops will address more specialist concerns through different specific projects. Again, practical workshops will be underpinned with contextual studies and increasingly a self reliant approach will be encouraged. In the final unit you will negotiate and devise your own project related to your specialist interest. You will work in a self motivated and independent way and will extend your critical and contextual understanding.
