Photography Summer Courses 2012

One Week Course Options

Our portfolio of summer photography courses is designed to cater for every level of competence; from complete novice to advanced photographer, there is a programme to fit your ability. Each course is of one week duration and we encourage you to combine as many as you need.

 

Week 1. Introduction to Photography

A not to be missed opportunity to learn all you want to know about how to manually operate a camera and take ‘great’ pictures.

Through a series of lectures, demonstrations and practical workshops you will learn how to effectively use your camera in order to achieve creative control.

You will learn the basic principles and practice of photography and study the work of celebrated photographers.

You will begin to understand shutter speed, aperture, lens control and picture making components such as composition, subject and lighting.

This is the perfect introduction to photography for those with little or no experience and is suitable for both digital and film users.

Week 2. The Photographic Studio

This popular experimental course allows you to develop your photographic skills. The course focuses on digital photography and creative picture making.

Working with industry professionals and academics you will study different aspects of photography, including camera functions, equipment, colour management, digital printing, studio lighting, portraiture, still life and location photography, whilst developing your own creativity and ideas.

There will be demonstrations about how to get the best from your photographic equipment and an opportunity to discuss your images and techniques. You will learn how to shoot interiors and exteriors using available lighting and portable flash equipment. The course will culminate with a small screening.

If you have completed the introductory course or have a sound basic knowledge of camera operation, this course is for you.

Week 3. Photography on Location

This course is designed for students who already have a good basic level of photographic skills. It aims to develop your knowledge and capabilities to a professional level.

The emphasis of this course is based on a practical approach and consists of workshops and location shoots, covering landscape photography and lighting on location. Using the most up-to-date location lighting equipment this course will concentrate on a wide range of creative lighting demonstrations backed-up with colour management and practical Photoshop techniques.

Photographers will be encouraged to develop their own ‘vision and style’ from constructive advice and critique sessions. You should have a good existing knowledge of photography to enrol onto this course.

This course will include trips to Dorset’s beautiful coastline and Brownsea Island.

Week 4. Professional Photographic Practice

During this course you will explore photography through a wide range of exciting and challenging photographic assignments. Led by an energetic and enthusiastic team of practicing professionals and freelance commercial photographers, you will work both in the studio, on location and in our professional imaging suites.

Depending on your levels of experience, you will be able to extend your technical skills and build confidence in your creative thought making processes, photographic ability and technical expertise.

You will also be encouraged to explore photographic genres, approaches and techniques in an intensive programme designed to advance your understanding of photography, as well as building upon your professional portfolio.

You must have a comprehensive understanding of photography and studio practice.

All courses run in successive order of proficiency, so you have the option of turning the 4 weeks into a fully comprehensive photography course.

 

Please note: Accommodation is not included in the course fees, however, we can arrange this for you at an added cost.
