Offering you an exciting opportunity to learn the art of patternmaking, this course is designed to provide the beginner with an understanding of basic pattern cutting principles and garment construction based on a standard size 12 block.

You will learn how to take measurements and apply them correctly to develop your own pattern using personal direct body measurements.

You will be shown the techniques of draping, a pattern cutting method used frequently by designers by draping fabric into a body form on a stand. You will learn how to use specialist equipment and will be taught pattern terminology and the correct written and drawn information that should be on finished patterns.

Using block pattern manipulation techniques, pivoting of darts and development of drafts, you will go on to learn and put into practice various seams and fabric choices. Technical advice will also be given on pockets and garment openings as well as grain lines, notches and selfidges when laying out pattern pieces.

Calico and pattern paper for making a practice garment, known as a toile, will be supplied during the course.

What you need to bring:
Dressmaker’s pins, tape measure, paper and fabric scissors, pens and pencils, notebook, 2b drawing pencils and a sketchbook. Two varieties of sketchbooks for your research can be purchased from the AUCB.
