Corsetry: Introduction

Offering an introduction to period corset making, this course will give you a basic understanding of the history of corsets from the 16th to the 19th Century and how corsets have manipulated the female body shape since the 16th Century.
Working in dedicated Costume Design studios, you will be taught by one of the world’s leading specialists. You will examine the changes in style and construction, and you will look at how the corset changes the shape of the body, and the affects it has on the outer clothing garments.
Practical demonstrations will take you through the various stages of cutting and making your own bespoke mid-19th century corset.
You will then explore original and modern techniques of drafting a pattern with appropriate fabric as well as the use of specialist boning techniques to create your very own corset, truthful to fit and period look.
What you need to bring: Notebook, ruler, pencil, rubber and a sewing kit containing: paper scissors, small pointed embroidery scissors, cutting shears, tape measure, pins, needles, white cotton thread and white tailors chalk.
