This exciting, varied and practical, two year course can lead directly into employment in the creative industries, or, as a progression to Higher Education courses in art, design, media or performance. Many students choose this course rather than remain at school after GCSE to study in a specialist creative environment.

IS THIS THE RIGHT COURSE FOR ME?

If you’re not sure which area of art and design you’d like to study, this course gives you the chance you to try a broad range of disciplines before focusing on a specific area. You’ll develop your interests and strengths as our expert tutors guide you through the course.

If you’re already clear about your career path, you’ll be encouraged to develop your specialism more fully (for example, a student interested in photography would use elements of photography within printmaking and graphic design).

This Level 3 qualification is equivalent to three A-levels at Grade C and above. The course is designed to give you a strong, practical knowledge in aspects of art, design and media. It covers a wide spectrum of disciplines such as fine art, painting and drawing, sculpture, fashion, textiles, graphic design, 3D design, video and photography.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND SPECIALIST PATHWAYS

Following a year exploring creative work across the spectrum of arts, design and media, you’ll have the opportunity to define your interests more closely through project work.

You’ll choose your personal area of development from Fashion, Costume and Textiles, Animation and Illustration, Fine Art, Film, Photography and Graphic Design. During this stage you’ll study at exciting specialist workshops that support your chosen area. The course culminates in a final major project that demonstrates the skills and knowledge you’ve gained.

HIGHER EDUCATION AND CAREERS ADVICE

Following a first year of exploratory studies introducing you to creative work across the spectrum of arts, design and media subjects, you will then have the opportunity to define your preferred interests more closely through project work. You will choose your personal area of development within the pathways of Fashion, Costume and Textiles, Animation and Illustration, Fine Art, Film, Photography and Graphic Design. During this stage you will have the opportunity to undertake some exciting specialist workshops to support your chosen area of study. The course culminates in a final major project in which you demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have attained throughout the course.

PORTFOLIO/INTERVIEW GUIDELINES

When you are called for interview you will  be asked to bring a portfolio with you. It is important that you bring as broad a range  of your most successful work as possible to enable us to assess your creative ability and potential. Please photograph very large pieces as they may be cumbersome to transport. Listed below are a number of suggestions to help you when organising your work. Please regard this list as a general guide rather than specific requirements:

· Drawings: You should try to include as many different kinds as possible, particularly from direct observation, as problem solving and drawing for design.

· Photography: If you have taken traditional and/or digital photographs, include these.

· Craft work and 3D Design: If you have done textiles, ceramics, wood or metal work you may bring either examples or photographs.

· You should include evidence that shows you have developed your own art and design  projects, eg. sketchbooks, notebooks, or worksheets.

· History of art and design projects/essays if you have produced any.

You should include work you have done in your own time as well as work produced at school.

If you require any special requirements – slide projector, video player or computer monitor (Mac or PC), please notify us in advance.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Two further qualifications are offered to complement  the main programme of study. NOCN Progression Award and Functional Skills together provide effective information and communication technology (ICT) skills and the ability to operate confidently and effectively in employment or higher education.

WILL I GET TO STUDY OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE?

There are many opportunities to visit art galleries, museums and exhibitions both locally and in London. You will also be encouraged to contribute to University College events, shows and exhibitions.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment of units will take place at designated times within the two-year timetable. Each brief will have the assessment criteria clearly displayed so that you are fully aware of what is required. You will have an assessment tutorial and be able to discuss actions for improvement with your tutor as well as obtain written feedback.

WHERE CAN I GO FROM HERE?

On successful completion of the course you may progress to a Foundation Degree or a BA (Hons) Degree course in an art, design, media or performance subject area. Alternatively, you may want to study on a further national or international course or choose to enter employment straight away. Whatever your decision, the solid grounding gained on your Extended Diploma will help prepare you for progression into Higher Education or for the start of your career.
