BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design (Top Up)
THE COURSE
This course builds on your previous study; inspiring and encouraging you to define, develop and push the boundaries of design into more specialist areas.
We’ll encourage you to find intellectually challenging and innovative solutions to issues in contemporary design. As well as advanced development of practical, theoretical and intellectual abilities, you’ll learn more about the professional standards you need to achieve.
You will develop autonomy and graduate as an expert in your field, prepared for post-graduate study or the demands of an ever more competitive creative industry.
We do not currently anticipate being able to accept direct entrants to this course in 2012/13.
STANDARD ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Students enrolling onto a top up course need 120 credits at Level 5 in a relevant area of study. Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS score in the range of 6.0 to 7.0, or a TOEFL score of 650 (paper based score) 250 (computer based score) or other equivalent.
Applicants to the final year of a BA (Hons) qualification may be required to undertake Bridging Studies to prepare them for year 3 studies on the Honours degree course.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
You need to be motivated, ambitious, inquisitive and prepared to develop the independence necessary for study at Honours level. You’ll need to show commitment to your field, work as part of a team, and be confident using your new skills.
You will be expected to demonstrate a quality in research, presentation and professionalism that sets you apart from the average and move you into a leading role in a challenging industry.
INTERVIEWS AND PORTFOLIOS
Interviews are
an opportunity for you to demonstrate your commitment and
self-motivation, and to discuss aspects of your chosen course.
You will be expected to display a good standard of traditional design skills on application and it would be an advantage to demonstrate additional digital skills. Whilst it is important your portfolio is representative of your current level of ability and demonstrates a clear interest in the chosen area of study, it should also attempt to show as wide a variety of your creative work as possible. This might include project work (2D and 3D work), sketchbooks, drawing (observation and imagination), making (photographs of models or large work are acceptable), research and analysis, and written work.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The structure of the course is made up of 4 units that develop your potential to engage with the intellectual challenges of contemporary issues in Interior Architecture and Design.
Collaborative Practice. The first design project of the third year, we are looking for you to take risks, develop collaborative relationships and, through the redefinition of what “interior” can mean, set your direction for your final year. You will be asked to reflect on and critique your work to date and use this review to inform your direction. This is your chance to develop an advanced design language and attitude towards the “interior” before you embark on your Major Project.
Investigative Study. This unit is an opportunity to pursue independent research that supports your Major Project. You’ll need to show skills in research, analysis, criticism and communication expected for the award of BA with Honours.
Major Project. Your chance to demonstrate creative maturity, technical proficiancy, intellectual enquiry and career ambition through an extended body of self-directed design work. Your work will need to show a high degree of professionalism and creativity, making clear your intent as a designer in the spatial arena.
Career Planning and Enterprise. You’ll prepare for employment by learning about self-promotion, building a portfolio, simulating work situations, thinking about your potential audience and clients and ultimately designing, building and marketing your graduation show – in London.
RESOURCES
Year 3 students work from the
design studio, complete with computer suite, independent workspace
and drawing boards. Learning is through group seminar work,
specialist tutor sessions, one-to-one tutorials, technical
lectures, computer facilities and workshops.
The course teaching team spans a wide breadth of skills, expertise and experience embracing both technical and more conceptual approaches to design. Visiting lecturers bring an awareness of specific skill areas and demonstrate a range of relevant design disciplines. Practitioners from architecture, interior and multidisciplinary design consultancies, illustration and other areas encourage you to develop your own individual style. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities and work with specialists in a group session or on a one-to-one basis whenever possible.
DEVELOPING YOUR SKILLS
Professionalism in
visual, written, verbal and, most importantly, self presentation
should be your goal to graduate with a BA (Hons). These skills,
combined with the highest quality portfolio, will help you make the
most of the opportunities in post-graduate study or a leading role
in the creative industries.
FUTURE CAREERS AND GRADUATE
SUCCESS
Graduates will possess a broad and expert
knowledge of spatially orientated design. Armed with a portfolio
that demonstrates breadth and versatility as well as specialism and
professionalism, you will be well-placed to move into an
increasingly diverse industry. Recent graduate successes include
work within architecture, urban master-planning, interior
architecture, interior design, theatre production, film production,
exhibition design, conceptual landscapes and branding, retail
design and maritime interiors.
