BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design (Top Up)
THE COURSE
The BA (Hons) Interior
Architecture and Design (Top Up) provides an unparalleled
opportunity for you to develop and refine the practice and
specialist knowledge that you have gained during previous study
(FdA, HND and Year 1 and 2 of an Honours programme). This Honours
year will enable you define, develop and push the boundaries of the
design of enclosed spaces into areas of specialism directed by
you.
Whatever your passion we will work with you in a liberating and dynamic environment to encourage intellectually challenging and innovative solutions to issues in contemporary design that have been identified by you.
The course supports advanced development of practical, theoretical and intellectual abilities as well as professional standards that will be demonstrated in extensive design projects driven by you.
The BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design (Top Up) will challenge you and demand from you the highest of standards. Rising to the challenge, you will develop autonomy and graduate as an expert in your field equally prepared for the rigours of post-graduate study or for the demands of an ever more competitive creative industry.
Applicants to the final year of a BA (Hons) qualification will be required to undertake Bridging Studies to prepare them for year 3 studies on the Honours degree course. The taught part of Bridging Studies takes place during the latter part of the summer term for those who studied their Foundation Degree at the Arts InstiUniversity Collegetute at Bournemouth, and during the summer for applicants from other institutions.
STANDARD ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Students
enrolling onto a top up course will need to have achieved 120
credits at Level 5 in a relevant area of study. Applicants whose
first language is not English should have an IELTS score in the
range of 6.0 to 7.0, or a TOEFL score of 650 (paper based score)
250 (computer based score) or other equivalent.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
You will need to be
motivated, ambitious, inquisitive and be prepared to develop the
autonomy and self-management necessary for study at Honours level;
have the ability to demonstrate commitment to your field; work as
part of a team; be assured of the skills you have acquired; and be
prepared to develop and refine new ones.
You will be expected to demonstrate quality in research, presentation and professionalism that will set you apart from the average and move you into a leading role in a challenging industry.
INTERVIEWS AND PORTFOLIOS
Interviews are
an opportunity for you to demonstrate your commitment and
self-motivation, and to discuss aspects of your chosen course.
You will be expected to display a good standard of traditional design skills on application and it would be an advantage to demonstrate additional digital skills. Whilst it is important your portfolio is representative of your current level of ability and demonstrates a clear interest in the chosen area of study, it should also attempt to show as wide a variety of your creative work as possible. This might include project work (2D and 3D work), sketchbooks, drawing (observation and imagination), making (photographs of models or large work are acceptable), research and analysis, and written work.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The structure of the
course is made up of 4 units that will further develop your
potential to engage with the intellectual challenges of the
contemporary issues in Interior Architecture and Design.
Special Study provides first hand experience of dealing with the challenges and expectations of the design of enclosed spaces. It includes the design of a self-initiated project, the opportunity to produce a focused body of work and a formal report that evaluates the project’s success after completion.
Investigative Study presents the opportunity to pursue a programme of advanced independent research that has the potential to support the content of the Final Major Project. The unit will provide you the opportunity to demonstrate your level of skills in research, analysis, criticism and communication which are commensurate with the award of BA with Honours.
Final Major Project provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate creative maturity, technical proficiancy, level of intellectual enquiry and career ambition through the completion of an extended body of self-directed design work. The work produced for the unit allows the opportunity to create a design that demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and creativity, making clear your intent as a designer in the spatial arena.
Promotion & Evaluation helps to prepare you for employment through self-promotion, including portfolio building and simulated work-related situations. The unit will also expect you to consider the audience/client base in preparation for practice after graduation.
RESOURCES
Year 3 students work from the
design studio, complete with computer suite, independent workspace
and drawing boards. Learning is through group seminar work,
specialist tutor sessions, one-to-one tutorials, technical
lectures, computer facilities and workshops.
The course teaching team spans a wide breadth of skills, expertise and experience embracing both technical and more conceptual approaches to design. Visiting lecturers bring an awareness of specific skill areas and demonstrate a range of relevant design disciplines. Practitioners from architecture, interior and multidisciplinary design consultancies, illustration and other areas encourage you to develop your own individual style. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities and work with specialists in a group session or on a one-to-one basis whenever possible.
DEVELOPING YOUR SKILLS
Professionalism in
visual, written, verbal and, most importantly, self presentation
should be your goal as you graduate from the BA (Hons) Interior
Architecture and Design (Top Up). All these, when combined with the
highest quality portfolio, will enhance your opportunity to enter
into either post-graduate study or a leading role in the creative
industries.
FUTURE CAREERS AND GRADUATE
