Lifelong Learning Networks

The overall objective for Lifelong Learning Networks (LLNs) is to improve the coherence, clarity and certainty of progression opportunities for vocational learners into and through higher education.

To achieve their overall objective, LLNs will undertake the following specific activities:

a. Curriculum development to facilitate progression: alignment that removes barriers to progression and bridging provision that forms part of the HE offer; and new HE curriculum development involving employers (foundation degrees, work-based learning, e-learning, collaborative modules).

b. Information, advice, guidance and learner support systems that allow LLNs to engage, and track, learners in the context of lifelong learning opportunities.

c. Production of network-wide progression agreements underpinned by agreement on credit that defines clearly the expectations about progression that learners can reasonably hold and makes institutional commitments that these expectations will be met.

LLNs complement the work of the Aimhigher programme, which seeks to raise aspirations and attainment to widen access and participation in HE. However, the focus of LLNs is on improving progression opportunities. Along with key partners such as Aimhigher, Regional Development Agencies, Sector Skills Councils, and local employers, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Department for Children Schools s & Families (DCSF) are seeking to collaborate with our national, regional and local partners on a new initiative to make a step change in vocational progression - Lifelong Learning Networks.

Lifelong Learning Networks will:

  • combine the strengths of a number of diverse institutions
  • provide support for learners on vocational pathways
  • bring greater clarity, coherence and certainty to progression opportunities
  • develop the curriculum as appropriate to facilitate progression
  • value vocational learning outcomes and provide opportunities for vocational learners to build on earlier learning
  • locate the progression strategy within a commitment to lifelong learning, ensuring that learners have access to a range of progression opportunities so that they can move between different kinds of vocational and academic programmes as their interests, needs and abilities develop.

The Arts University College is an active member of two Lifelong Learning Networks - the regional South West Lifelong Learning Network (SWLLN), and the National Arts Learning Network (NALN).

Since the heart of Lifelong Learning Networks is about progression and widening participation, essentially from level 2 and 3 qualifications through to university level, there is a synergy in the activities upon which the University College is engaged with both Lifelong Learning Networks.
