Universal Access By Design

UABD in use in the Library

The Universal Access By Design System

We use a unique colour and symbol system in the Library. It is the result of a project called Universal Access by Design (UABD) which was conceptualised by a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student as part of his final major project.

Universal Access by Design uses colours and symbols to access different sections within the Library. It creates a more visual environment for the user, allowing them to find the correct shelves without having to rely on using the traditional Dewey Decimal System.

It is of particular benefit for students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, or those with visual impairments, as it uses both colour and symbols. Each of the Library’s main subject areas now has a colour and symbol associated with it.
